January 26, 2024

In a momentous celebration, Buckeye Hills Regional Council is joining with Area Agencies on Aging in Ohio to proudly mark their 50th anniversary, a testament to five decades of dedicated service under the Older Americans Act. These agencies have been instrumental in empowering older adults to live with dignity and independence.

Ohio’s Area Agencies on Aging play a crucial role in planning, developing, funding, and implementing local systems of coordinated aging services. With a commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults, they have been at the forefront of providing a wide array of home and community-based services.

There are twelve AAAs that represent all 88 counties in Ohio. Nationally, there are 670 AAAs. Ohio’s AAAs are designated by the Ohio Department of Aging.

“Buckeye Hills Regional Council has served as the designated Area Agency on Aging for Southeast Ohio since 1974,” said BHRC Aging & Health Director Jennifer Westfall. “Over the years, our organization has expanded its services to provide support to a more extensive range of programs that benefit older adults and community members. “It inspires me every day to see the positive impact our network of partners and providers has on the lives of older adults in our region.”

Under the legislation of the Older Americans Act, these agencies have tirelessly worked to create and sustain local programs that cater to the unique needs of older adults in their planning and service areas. From congregate meals to wellness classes, their impact is felt in every aspect of the aging community.

“We invite everyone to join us in commemorating this significant milestone. Our 50th-anniversary events will not only honor the legacy of the past but also illuminate the path forward as we continue our mission to support older adults in living fulfilling lives,” added BHRC Executive Director Chasity Schmelzenbach.
