Hocking County Ohio

Hocking county was organized in 1818 from portions of Athens, Fairfield, and Ross counties. Its name comes from the Hocking River, named for its “bottle” shape by the Native American tribes that lived in and traveled through the area. Hocking County lay on the edge of the great charcoal iron furnace district known as the Hanging Rock region, which produced munitions for use in the American Civil War.

Today, Hocking County is best known for the massive sandstone outcroppings, deep cool gorges, towering hemlocks, and glistening waterfalls encompassed in Hocking Hills State Park and Hocking Hills State Forest.
