Chronic Pain Self-Management
A no cost, six-week workshop that helps people with chronic pain to better manage their symptoms and their daily lives. The workshop provides information and teaches practical skills. It gives people the confidence and motivation they need to manage the challenges of living with chronic pain. Chronic Pain Self-Management Education is for you if:
- You have long-term pain or care for someone living with chronic pain;
- You are looking for better ways to manage symptoms;
- Feel limited in your daily activities;
- Feel tired, alone, or fearful because of your health or the health of a loved one.
Location: OhioHealth – O’Bleness Hospital 55 Hospital Drive, Athens, OH
Dates: April 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Time: 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Workshop groups meet once a week for 2½ hours, over six weeks. In the workshop, you will learn how to: • use techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation and poor sleep; • exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance; • use of medications; • communication skills; • healthy eating; • pacing activity and rest; • goal setting; and • how to evaluate new treatments
Participants take an active role in the workshop. They set individual goals each week and work to accomplish their goals throughout the following week. Participants are asked to share their goals and progress with the group.

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning group program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants meet in small groups in community settings once a week for eight weeks. They learn to view falls as controllable, set realistic goals, change their environment to reduce risk factors and exercise to increase strength and balance. Through group discussion, problem-solving activities, assertiveness training, exercise and skill building, participants are empowered to take simple steps to become more active without the fear of falling.
