Working Caregiver Support Program

The Buckeye Hills Working Caregiver Support Program addresses the growing needs of working caregivers and their employers.

Often mis-characterized as an “older worker” issue, demographic trends indicate that a greater number of employees of all ages will assume the role of family caregiver with an increasingly older population.

Findings indicate that there is an 8% differential in increased health care costs between caregiving and non-caregiving employees, potentially costing U.S. employers an extra estimated $13.4 billion per year.  Employees providing eldercare are more likely to report fair or poor health, and are more likely to report depression, diabetes, hypertension, or pulmonary disease.The cost to employers for absenteeism, workplace disruptions, and reduced work status of working caregivers is between $17.1 and $33.6 billion per year.

Employers can serve the best interests of their employees as well as those of their corporation by anticipating and responding to the challenges of eldercare for their employees.  In combination, elder care benefits and wellness programs can provide not only the needed support to working caregivers, but also a vehicle to directly reduce employee health care costs, with the resulting bottom-line benefits to the employer.


Workplace Seminars and Workshops

(Workplace seminars and workshops are free of charge.)

Blueprint for Lifelong Planning: A comprehensive overview of issues facing individuals who are planning for retirement, long-term care or are a caregiver.  Includes an overview of Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, legal issues and long-term care planning. 1-2 hrs.

Medicare 101: An introduction and comprehensive overview of Medicare including a description of each part – A, B, C, D, choosing supplemental plans and how Social Security plays a role.  1 hr.

Working Caregiver Assistance Program: Provides working caregivers with information about resources and services to help balance their work and caregiver responsibilities. 1 hr.

SE Ohio Aging and Disability Resource Network Programs and Services:
An overview of the history of Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and ADRNs and the programs and supports they offer to individuals 60+, under 60 who have a disability and their caregivers. 1-2 hrs.

Medicare Information & Assistance Workshop:  Trained Counselors will provide information  and assistance for Medicare, benefits and insurance needs as well as assists with claim resolution if needed. Time TBD

Information and Referral Services:

AIRS Certified Information and Referral (I&R) Specialists will provide information to working caregivers and their families on-site at employer location, by phone or in the Buckeye Hills office. I&R Specialists provide information about available community services and supports (some state or federally funded and some private pay).  I&R Specialists will provide referrals to appropriate community services, supports and legal and financial specialists. I&R services are free of charge.

In-home Assessment:

Trained Buckeye Hills Assessors will perform an in-home visit to provide a full-spectrum assessment of an individual’s needs. In-home assessments are free of charge.

  • Assessment of Activities of Daily Living – eating, bathing, dressing, grooming.
  • Assessment of Independent Activities of Daily Living – telephoning, shopping, food preparation, housekeeping, laundry mode of transportation, medication management and managing finances.
  • Environmental Assessment for health and safety.
  • Assistance with benefit applications
  • Referral to community organizations for needed supports and services
  • Nutrition risk assessment
  • Falls risk assessment
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Consumer education

Employee Wellness Programming:

“Healthy U”

Healthy U is a workshop that helps participants learn proven strategies to manage chronic health conditions and feel healthier. Developed by Stanford University, Healthy U is an evidence-based program that is conducted in six weekly, interactive, small-group sessions that focus on the participants’ role in managing their own illnesses.

Topics include:

  • Strategies to deal with stress, frustration, fatigue, pain and depression;
  • Using physical activity to maintain and improve strength, flexibility and endurance;
  • How to use medications safely and appropriately;
  • Better ways to talk with your doctor and your family about your health;
  • Using good nutrition to improve health and control symptoms;
  • How to evaluate new treatments; and
  • Setting and achieving personal goals.

Each participant receives a copy of :Living a Healthy Life with chronic Conditions: a 374-page guide to self-management.  Limited funding is available to help defray employer cost for this program.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers:

Buckeye Hills staff Cathy Ash, LSW, and Gerri VanNoy, SWA, CIRS-A, have completed training to be certified leaders for the Powerful Tools for Caregivers program. This program will offer additional options to the region’s caregivers.

The evidence-based program was developed by Dr. Kate Lorig and her colleagues at Stanford Univ. and is a national program. It is a six-week class that assists caregivers with self-care tools to: reduce personal stress; change negative self-talk; communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers; communicate more effectively in challenging situations; recognize the messages in their emotions; deal with difficult feelings; and make tough caregiving decisions.
