Buckeye Hills Regional Council’s popular Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program helps eligible older adults in southeast Ohio access fresh, nutritious produce throughout the summer and fall months.
“Historically, we have experienced waitlists for the Senior Farmers’ Market Program. This summer, we still have room for new enrollees, and we want to ensure that all those who want to participate know that the program is available,” stated Jennifer Westfall, Aging and Disability Director at Buckeye Hills Regional Council.
The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Aging to allow income-eligible seniors the opportunity to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables from participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Participants receive ten $5 coupons that can be exchanged for fresh produce from May through October.
“In 2020, COVID required changes to the program to protect participants’ health and safety, but the traditional program that everyone has enjoyed over the years has returned,” said Westfall. “Coupon amounts, usage, and farmer participation have returned to normal for 2021. Our seniors once again have a great opportunity to receive fresh produce from the local farmers who support this program.”
Individuals interested in participating in the program are encouraged to visit www.buckeyehills.org/sfmnp to access the mail-in form or apply online. Applicants may also call Buckeye Hills Regional Council at 1-800-331-2644 Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
