Brownfields

Brownfield projects can range from remediating buildings with asbestos or lead contamination to assessing and cleaning up abandoned properties that once managed hazardous chemicals. Former brownfield properties throughout Ohio and across the country have been redeveloped for productive uses such as grocery stores, affordable housing, health centers, cultural facilities, parks, and more.

What is a Brownfield?

A brownfield is a property where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. It is estimated that there are more than 450,000 brownfields in the U.S. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties increases local tax bases, facilitates job growth, utilizes existing infrastructure, takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment.

Brownfield Resources

Several state and federal programs support assessment, planning, and remediation for redeveloping brownfield sites.
