Driving Safety Forward: Highlights from Noble County's CarFit Event

A CarFit volunteer speaks to a driver. The summer heat didn’t stop the successful CarFit event held behind NAPA in Noble County on June 18. The Buckeye Hills Regional Council mobility managers partnered with the Joyce M. Davis Senior Center and the Noble County Health Department to bring this important safety initiative to the community.

CarFit is designed specifically for older adults, who face a higher risk of serious injury or fatality in a crash due to age-related physical changes. The program focuses on improving driver safety by helping older drivers adjust their vehicles to better fit their individual needs, enhancing comfort, control and confidence behind the wheel. In addition, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) from the Noble County Health Department provided car seat inspections to ensure that child safety seats were properly installed and used correctly.

Marietta Memorial Hospital supported the event by providing two occupational therapists, who were on-site to help participants identify and address issues related to strength, flexibility and range of motion that can impact driving. Attendees received personalized recommendations to optimize their fit within their vehicles, improving safety and reducing fatigue behind the wheel.

“The CarFit program was enjoyable and relaxed, especially since I know many of the volunteers,” said Joan Jackson, of Caldwell. “Participating boosted my confidence and reassured me that I was doing everything correctly.”

Joan Jackson shared her positive experience with the CarFit program, describing it as enjoyable and relaxed, especially since she knew many of the volunteers. She said participating boosted her confidence and reassured her that she was doing everything correctly.

During a CarFit session, trained technicians guide participants through a 12-point checklist covering key areas such as seat position, mirror adjustments, steering wheel tilt, and more. Five additional technicians were trained in Noble County, joining the team of four who had previously completed their training in the area. These events are designed to support older adults in staying safely and independently mobile for as long as possible.

“As the Coordinator for the Noble County CarFit event, I love being that connection that helps older adults stay independent and confident behind the wheel,” said Julia Hinzman, Mobility Manager for Buckeye Hills Regional Council.

Organizers expressed appreciation to all who attended and shared that they look forward to the next CarFit event in Noble County.
